Congratulations! You purchased one of the fabric panels from my shop and it has arrived. And you may be wondering: what do I do now? Luckily, you have a few options and it all depends on whether you wish to use a sewing machine or you wish to sew by hand.
Option 1: You wish to use Sewing Machine…

If you have a sewing machine, I am making all sorts of assumptions: you have sewing machine needles, thread, scissors, and pins. I assume you have some experience with sewing and how to use a sewing machine. (If you do not, check out the beginner video below to help you get started.) The only thing I assume you do not have is what to stuff your doll with, a.k.a. poly-fil. For this particular doll, you do not need a whole of poly-fil. I typically use about 3 1/2 ounces. You can buy two 2-oz bags from Jo-Ann’s if you do not often make dolls or other plushies. If you prefer a natural organic fill, here is an option I used but know that these bags are sold by the pound. I noticed that it also gave the doll a denser feel.
Option 2: You wish to sew by hand
The most important thing you need for sewing by hand is patience, really. The process is a little slower but it can be very relaxing once you find your groove.
To hand-sew your doll, you will follow all the same directions that are printed directly on the fabric panel you purchased (cutting along the line and pinning right sides together). However, instead of using of a sewing machine, you will use a needle and thread.
You will use a single strand of thread and the smallest needle you feel comfortable holding. I know many people like to use sharps but they feel too short for my fingers. I prefer to use longer needles like a Number 2 Embroidery needle. I recommend that you choose something that feels right to you!
For sewing the two sides together, you can choose to use a running stitch or a back stitch (see the YouTube videos below). Your sewing line should be 1/4″ from the edge. And make sure to leave an opening for turning right side out and for stuffing. To Be Continued…
Hello, Do you participate in Craft and Artisans Fairs? I organize a fair each November in Concord, MA. Your dolls are great!
